It has been a little quiet on our side since our first blog at the beginning of the year. As it seems, even the best made plans don’t always pan out like you thought or hoped they would. It is now mid-April, and we are still very much in the Netherlands. Everything has been delayed as it took much longer for us to sell our house than we had originally thought. Maybe the end of November was not a great time to put it on the market after all.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel. The house is technically sold (they just need to organise their mortgage), and the buyers are working towards a transfer date very early in June. With us having moved into the new house at the end of May, the route is now theoretically open for us to hit the road in the first week of June.
Because we haven’t changed the end date of the sabbatical, it means we’ll be going for shorter than Plan A, so we also revised our travel itinerary. The idea still is not to rush things so the west coast of France, Portugal and Spain will have to wait for another time. Our Plan B is to focus on Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and hopefully have time left to travel home via at least the western coastline of Italy. But more on that to follow.
After focusing on everything that was house related the last couple of months, we are now back into the swing of things to get ready for the trip. We do still need to buy the most important item for the trip – the “vouwwagen”/trailer tent, but that’s something we hope to wrap up soon. In the meantime, we’ve been making lists, comparing options and starting to familiarise ourselves with how to find the best camping spots (where dogs are also allowed).
Speaking of dogs, we still needed a solution to take LuLu with us when we use our bicyles which Kris has every intention of doing often. Me, not so sure. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a keen cyclist but then maybe my new electric bicycle can change that. There is always hope. But I digress. We looked at a lot of different options, also keeping weight in mind, but it seems not all dog trailers are suitable for electric bicycles. Some manufacturers even actively discourage it because of the risk of the trailer becoming unstable because of the potentially higher speeds. Based on everything we read, the DoggyRide seems to be the Rolls-Royce of (affordable) dog trailers, mainly because the connection point is in the middle of the trailer (many others have it to the side) making it more stable and less likely to tip over in a bend.
It just so happens that we have a DoggyRide Mini which we bought second hand about four years ago in the first summer we had LuLu. We have resurrected it to see what we need to do/buy to make is serviceable for the trip. It turns out that if you take the wheels off (easy enough to do) it can also double as a dog crate and with the stroller kit, it turns into a buggy. That’s two must-haves ticked off by buying some additional bits and pieces.
Step 1 though was getting LuLu reacquainted with her DoggyRide. She was very keen to get into it, which is a bit of a surprise as she wasn’t all that fond of going for rides in it. Maybe now that she is a little older and we do more cycling together, she might find she likes it a little more. Well, she’ll have to, because that will often be a preferred mode of transport!

Step 2 is going to be ordering new attachments. Because we now have electric bicycles, the tow bar we have is not going to work because it attaches to the back wheel hub, so we need to order one that will fit onto the luggage rack. And then there is the stroller wheel and push bar, which is going to be a bit of a challenge to transport if we cycle somewhere and then go walk around. It is not the smallest stroller, but it does mean we don’t have to take a separate stroller with. Time will tell…
In the coming week or so we’ll get that sorted and then do some practice runs to see how it goes. The weather has been great the last couple of weeks, so hopefully that will hold and we get to cycle past the cherry trees that are in full bloom.
Het is een beetje stil geweest aan onze kant sinds onze eerste blog begin dit jaar. Het lijkt erop dat zelfs de best gemaakte plannen niet altijd zo uitpakken als je had verwacht of gehoopt. Het is inmiddels half april en we zijn nog steeds volop in Nederland. Alles heeft vertraging opgelopen omdat het veel langer duurde voordat we ons huis verkochten dan we eerder hadden gedacht. Misschien was eind november toch niet het beste moment om het te koop te zetten.
Maar er is licht aan het einde van de tunnel. Het huis is formeel verkocht (in die zin dat ze alleen nog hun hypotheek hoeven te regelen) en de kopers werken toe naar een overdrachtsdatum begin juni. Nu we eind mei in het nieuwe huis zijn getrokken, is de weg in theorie open om in de eerste week van juni te vertrekken.
Omdat we de einddatum van de sabbatical niet hebben gewijzigd, betekent dit dat we korter zullen reizen dan Plan A, dus hebben we ook onze reisroute aangepast. Het idee is nog steeds om niet te overhaasten, dus de westkust van Frankrijk, Portugal en Spanje zullen nog even moeten wachten. Ons Plan B is om ons te concentreren op Corsica, Sardinië en Sicilië en hopelijk nog tijd over te hebben om via ten minste de westkust van Italië naar huis te reizen. Maar daarover later meer.
Nadat we ons de afgelopen maanden op het huis hebben geconcentreerd, zijn we nu weer druk bezig met de voorbereidingen voor de reis. We moeten nog het belangrijkste item voor de reis kopen: de vouwwagen, maar daar hopen we snel mee klaar te zijn. In de tussentijd hebben we lijstjes gemaakt, opties vergeleken en ons verdiept in het vinden van de beste kampeerplekken (waar honden ook zijn toegestaan).
Over honden gesproken, we hadden nog steeds een oplossing nodig om LuLu mee te nemen als we onze fietsen gebruiken, wat Kris van plan is om vaak te doen. Ik weet het niet zo zeker. Iedereen die mij kent, weet dat ik niet zo’n fanatieke fietser ben, maar misschien kan mijn nieuwe elektrische fiets daar verandering in brengen. Er is altijd hoop. Maar ik dwaal af. We hebben veel verschillende opties bekeken, ook rekening houdend met het gewicht, maar het lijkt erop dat niet alle hondenkarren geschikt zijn voor elektrische fietsen. Sommige fabrikanten raden het zelfs actief af vanwege het risico dat de kar instabiel wordt door de mogelijk hogere snelheden. Op basis van alles wat we lezen, lijkt de DoggyRide de Rolls-Royce onder de (betaalbare) hondenkarren te zijn, vooral omdat het bevestigingspunt in het midden van de kar zit (veel anderen hebben het aan de zijkant), waardoor hij stabieler is en minder snel omvalt in een bocht.
Toevallig hebben we een DoggyRide Mini die we zo’n vier jaar geleden tweedehands kochten, in de eerste zomer dat we LuLu hadden. We hebben het weer in elkaar gezet om te kijken wat we moeten doen/kopen om het geschikt te maken voor de reis. Het blijkt dat als je de wielen eraf haalt (makkelijk genoeg) hij ook als hondenbench kan dienen en met de kinderwagenset kun je hem omtoveren tot een buggy. Dat zijn twee must-haves afgevinkt door wat extra onderdelen te kopen.
Stap 1 was echter LuLu weer laten wennen aan haar DoggyRide. Ze wilde er heel graag in, wat best verrassend is, want ze was er niet zo dol op om ermee te fietsen. Misschien vindt ze het nu ze wat ouder is en we vaker samen fietsen, wat ze er wat leuker mee vindt. Nou ja, dat zal ze wel moeten, want dat zal vaak haar favoriete vervoermiddel zijn!
Stap 2 is het bestellen van nieuwe accessoires. Omdat we nu elektrische fietsen hebben, werkt de trekhaak die we nu hebben niet meer, omdat hij aan de achterwielnaaf wordt bevestigd. We moeten er dus een bestellen die op de bagagedrager past. En dan is er nog het kinderwagenwiel en de duwstang, die een behoorlijke uitdaging vormen om te vervoeren als we ergens fietsen en dan gaan wandelen. Het is niet de kleinste kinderwagen, maar het betekent wel dat we geen aparte kinderwagen mee hoeven te nemen. De tijd zal het leren…
De komende tijd gaan we dat regelen en dan wat oefenrondjes doen om te kijken hoe het gaat. Het weer is de afgelopen weken fantastisch geweest, dus hopelijk blijft dat zo en kunnen we langs de kersenbomen fietsen die volop in bloei staan.
